This memory, which seems impossible to forget, marks the beginning of an approach to one's own family history and, related to it, intergenerational questions about fatherhood. Central to Chris Schnerr's exploration of the biographical and political dimensions of this research are the changing social notions of masculinity - the question of what ideologies they are based on and how they can be deconstructed. In Male Fantasies, Klaus Theweleit uses the so-called Freikorps literature of the Weimar Republic to analyze an ideal of the soldierly man in which fascism is already inherent and which paved the way for the National Socialism that followed a few years later.² The violence underlying this understanding of masculinity is taking on new forms today and is evident, among other things, in the increasing extremism of the incel movement³ and its growing links to white supremacy ideologies. In his book, Theweleit picks up recurring metaphors for the threatening Other that needs to be conquered: the red tide, the swamp of the Republic and the wave of blood. Within liquid, things threaten to mix with each other, crossing national and physical boundaries - an idea that contradicts the fascist ideal of purity. The communist enemy, like the woman, is portrayed by the Freikorps as something fluid and thus uncontrollable, which must be countered: the soldierly man Theweleit describes is characterized by hardness and steadfastness. He has body armor against which the floods are supposed to crash.⁴ This dualism of solid and liquid, which in the Freikorps' world of thought serves to clearly separate the nationalistic, male subject from his threats, is taken up by Chris Schnerr in his work VVater, through the choice of materials: concrete, a solid material from which bunkers are also built, and silicone, used among other qualities for its elasticity in the production of sex toys, meet and mix in the small-format wall objects. Both materials are initially liquid, but can become stable, flexible or fragile as they process. The thin layers of concrete in the works are sometimes brittle, and the forms of the silicone are reminiscent of bodily fluids. Text fragments contain quotes and thoughts on gender identity and parenthood that narrate both resistance and vulnerability. The words "PENIS TROUBLE" are embedded in the pink silicone in one of the objects in clumsy letters: the penis is in trouble - as an outdated symbol of masculinity and domination in the heteronormative and cisnormative logic of still widespread male fantasies. Silicone has long been part of Chris Schnerr's artistic practice. In his exploration of corporeality and queer sex practices, dildos, often made of silicone, have been a recurring part of his work - as sculptural entities as well as elements of participatory performance. Paul B. Preciado writes about this in his Contrasexual Manifesto: "[...] the dildo becomes a virus that corrupts the truth of sex and the genitals. It is not faithful to the organs’ nature. It is the servant that rebels against its master and, proposing itself as an alternative route to pleasure, turns the master’s authority into an object of derision."⁵ The work VVater (a neologism of water and the german word for father, Vater) counters traditional notions of masculinity with humor and with a certain fragility and tenderness. Outdated practices of harsh parenting are replaced by a father role that sees itself as loving and caring. Thus, inspired by creative techniques used by his own child, materials such as glitter glue, window paint, and pasta letters also appear in Chris Schnerr's work. While we witness reactionary backlashes against sexual and gender diversity, the deconstruction of hardened ideals of masculinity remains a necessary and ongoing artistic, personal and social process. It’s a sketch, as a method to help me researching in my long-term project of exploring my birth family's history, as a history of perpetrators in the context of National Socialism, and intergenerational trauma sharing, toxic masculinity and thinking into documentary game mechanics. Bunker Fleischstein laid the foundation for the following work VVater. The state of this sketch is unfinished, and I will not pursue further development of this build, as I have encountered limitations that are too fundamental for my ideological purposes. The object-oriented view mechanic, the low-poly 3D dimensional space, and the single-player mode, to name a few, produce a working logic that is contrary to what I was aiming for. This could have been a stepping stone to a more advanced version of the original idea, an open-world multiplayer online library of my research, but funding fell through. However, this sketch helped me better understand the scope of my long-term research, while finding ideas like sex positivism as an emancipatory practice and concrete as a material substance. 🥀 I produced Fleischstein financed by a Projektstipendium of the Hessische Kulturstiftung. Since the timeframe was tight, I used Unity as a game engine for the sketch – a decision based on economic pressure that contradicts my usual practice of supporting independent, open-source, and common-good-oriented tools. The work consists of three main elements: the installation, the sculptures and the performance, with the performative part being the most prominent. The performance itself is also divided into three parts: the search for participants, the agreement on which body parts and dildos should be part of the play, and the actual play. The dildos are non-phallic porcelain sculptures, made by hand or slip-cast, and usually finished with various self-made glazes. This pursuit of uniqueness underlines the ecological and economic value and encourages the players to be more careful with the ceramics and with each other. Why do we have them and how useful are they, or do they limit the expression and needs of those who are guided by them? As the author of the game, I am the authority in defining the rules. Since it is a game about getting physical with each other, by chance even intimate and constantly in the light of sexual play, I want to relinquish as much authority as possible while still providing a framework to negotiate with. This shift in authority clashes with the conventional rules of the white cube gallery context: don't touch, don't break, guarantee the continuity of the work. They don't work with J0Y5T1CK5 and are therefore excluded. Not only to embrace the idea of emancipation from the hierarchy of rules, but also to allow visitors to touch, use and eventually break the sculptures. If the players decide to follow the score of J0Y5T1CK5, it will be like a puzzle with bodies. Each dildo is randomly assigned to one of the body parts consensually added to the game. Now the players have to connect with each other through all the selected dildos, translating the sculptures into controllers and challenging gravity. Communication and awareness of each other's bodies will be necessary to prevent the fragile dildos from falling. If all the dildos are broken, the game is no longer accessible. Due to data loss, the only functional version available is the one for his last exhibition in a physical space that is VR-only (Oculus Rift, Quest 2 doesn't work either) and without a menu. 💾️ Download / itch.io🐱&nbsp;Github Water on Mars is an invitation to an intimate game experience. It opens by using the photogrammetric interpretation of the authors, my, naked body and allowing the players to virtually walk it. The players can move on its surface by entering the natural orifices of the body and passing through the 3D modeled, abstract interpretations of my internal organs to leave the body on the other side. It is a subtle attempt to manipulate the long-standing trope of the female body as a landscape to be discovered, explored, and conquered, which is only possible with a body read as masculine, or at least not feminine. Starting with a fragile pose at the beginning and then keeping as many errors in the beta-state algorithm of Autodesk Momento (the photogrammetric software to convert the photos of my body into a 3D object) as gamelogically possible, is an additional approach to break the untouchable, strong and cool trope of masculinity by embracing fragility and subsequently vulnerability. For further development I would think of adding more liquids/fluids that are connoted as feminine and mixing them with the Mars-like environment. 🦶👨‍🦲 On the hardware level, I chose VR glasses to enhance the intimate game experience and reduce the distracting potential of other visitors and sound in the exhibition. the world on their own. The environment itself visually tells a story of the subterranean, organic and earthy dark side upon which we build our existence. This is personal, as I grew up in a meat-heavy, working-class environment, and refers to my exposure to and understanding of gardening, plant-based living, organic agriculture, and a more holistic view of our ecosystem. In terms of gameplay, different play styles result in different behaviors of the surroundings. A total of 20 papers from various publication venues from 2006 to 2014 are analyzed in terms of their conceptualizations of a " game jam ". The background of the papers and their contribution to game jam research are also critically examined. A further explication, " an advanced definition " , is proposed as a basis for future academic discussions and collaborations.
